Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Festival

Date: October 26, 2024

The Emma Crawford Coffin Races in Manitou Springs is a quirky, fun-filled annual event that celebrates the town’s spooky history with a dash of humor. Teams of costumed racers compete by pushing creatively designed coffins down the street, all in honor of Emma Crawford, a local legend who was carried up and buried on Red Mountain.

In 1891, Emma Crawford was originally buried on Red Mountain, and years later in 1929 her body eerily slid down the mountain, inspiring the Emma Crawford Coffin Races we know today. Now, teams create their own version of “Emma” and race their decorated coffins down the hill in her honor. With a parade, live entertainment, and plenty of Halloween spirit, this unique race draws spectators from all over for a day of festive fun and friendly competition!
