2026 Cripple Creek Donkey Derby Days

Start date: June 26, 2026
End date: June 28, 2026

Donkey Derby Days is one of Cripple Creek’s most beloved historic festivals, celebrating the town’s Gold Rush heritage with a weekend of donkey races, live entertainment, games, heritage competitions, vendors, and family-friendly fun. The event is inspired by Cripple Creek’s resident donkey herd, which is believed to be descended from the hardworking donkeys used during the area’s mining days.

The festival dates back to the 1930s, when local businessman Charley Lehew helped create a community event to bring visitors to town. Donkey racing became the main attraction, and more than 90 years later, Donkey Derby Days is still one of Cripple Creek’s favorite traditions. The 2026 festival takes place June 26–28 in downtown Cripple Creek, and admission is free.

Why go? Donkey Derby Days is a great pick for families, history lovers, and anyone looking for a quirky Colorado mountain-town festival with deep local roots.
